Welcoming a new puppy into your family is a joyful and memorable experience. Preparing ahead of time ensures your puppy feels safe, comfortable, and supported from the moment they arrive. This guide outlines the essential items and recommendations every new family should have on hand, based on years of hands-on experience, careful research, and a genuine desire to help your puppy thrive.

1. Comfortable and Safe Sleeping Area

Your puppy needs a dedicated, cozy space where they can rest and feel secure. A crate is one of the most valuable tools for raising a confident, well-adjusted puppy. It supports house training, provides a safe retreat and helps them establish a healthy routine.

Choosing the Right Crate

Select a crate that allows your puppy to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Always choose a crate your puppy can grow into, not out of — most come with dividers to adjust the interior space as they grow.

2. Quality Food and Water Bowls

Sturdy, hygienic bowls make feeding safe and easier for both you and your puppy.

We recommend stainless steel only — specifically 304, 316, or 440c grade steel — as they’re food-safe and resistant to corrosion. Avoid plastic bowls, which can harbor bacteria and cause allergic reactions in some dogs. Consider elevating your puppy's bowls to support healthy digestion using some of these stands.

We also recommend filtered or bottled water for puppies. Our puppies receive distilled water while in our care.

3. Nutritious Puppy Food

Nutrition is the foundation of lifelong health. We strongly support fresh feeding — raw or gently cooked — but we understand many families prefer high-quality kibble.

Start with turkey, then slowly introduce new proteins. Also as you build your confidence you can slowly start to make your own "Raw" diet and move away from commercial. This will not only save you tons of money but you will feel much better because you know exactly whats in your dogs food.

  • BETTER — Homemade Gently Cooked
    • Wonderful for families who want the benefits of fresh food without going fully raw. Balanced is key — reach out if you need help with recipes.

  • GOOD — ½ Raw or Cooked & ½ Kibble
    • If you can do any Raw or even gently cook food as a topper or mix with kibble it truly would be way more beneficial to your puppy/dog than just feeding a kibble alone. This would also help stretch the kibble and help with the cost.

  • OK — Dry Kibble
  • Avoid:
    • Foods with peas

    • Corn or soy fillers

    • Grain-free formulas (grain-free diets WILL cause DCM)

Adjust portions gradually based on growth, genetics, and activity level — feeding is not one-size-fits-all.

4. Collar, Leash, and Harnesses

Safety is a top priority when your puppy starts exploring the world outside your home. A well-fitting collar and leash are essential for walks and outings.

5. Chew Toys, Interactive Toys & Training Items

Puppies need physical and mental enrichment. Providing a variety of textures, puzzles, and enrichment toys prevents boredom and reduces unwanted chewing.

Rotate toys regularly to keep your puppy engaged and learning.

6. Puppy Training Pads and Cleaning Supplies

House training takes time — and patience. Be prepared with the right tools.
